Working and Eating.

Let's talk about my favorite topic first, eating. Despite the fact that I'm skinny, I like to eat. This week, I've been wondering about preservatives in food. Are they really good for you? I'm not so sure. As a result, I've been heading down this new and fresh path. No pun intended really. Fresh foods. I believe I'm going to start making a concerted effort to substantially reduce the amount of foods I eat which are frozen and pre-prepared. I'm not going off on some crazy holistic/PETA/organic kick or anything. Just trying to be a little more healthy. You know?

Which brings me to my second topic. In a few weeks my mom is heading off to Hawaii for a month to visit her parents. On my dad's side my grandparents lived until they were in their late 90's. Likewise, on my mom's side, my grandparents are in their late 80's.

The three things they have in common are:

1. Eating balanced diets of fruits, vegetables, poultry, beef, fish, and whole grains.
2. Working and staying active all through their lives.
3. Being married 50+ years in a loving marriage where the wife supported the husband in all his activities, and likewise, the husband supported the wife in her activities.

Now, I'm not married so I can't really comment on #3, but I know that on #2, working adds a tremendous sense of self worth an value to our lives as humans. Indeed, it is not in the nature of man to lay around and not do anything. Sure we might like to take a break at times, but I know, when I'm not doing anything, I'm only satisfied with that for about 2 weeks. I have to be doing something productive and making money.

No one knows when their time is going to be up. But, why potentially hurry it along when in theory it is possible to prolong your life with a few simple lifestyle changes?
