Today was my first full day in Milford CT. Work was going well today, but just before lunch we had a little blow up of a problem, so now, what we thought looked like a cakewalk week is going to no doubt turn quite ugly come tomorrow. I am not looking forward to it.
It was freakin' raining cats and dogs this morning, so the team opted to order in for lunch instead of getting out. Especialy since no one knew where to go. The company had a menu from a restaurant they frequent so they offered that up. The guys were talking about getting something on the specials list called a "Monte Cristo". I had never even heard of that so one of the guys googled it on the puter so we could all see what it was. Basically it turns out it is a ham & turkey with swiss cheese sandwich inbetween French Toast lookin bread. That sounded good to me, so that's what I got. Well, when I got it, it was ok. Kind of greasy. But not too bad.
We left the facility a little after 5 PM and went back to the hotel to do emails and stuff.
Met back up with the team at 6 PM and we went out for dinner and drinks. Actually we just went out for dinner. But afterwards, several people wanted to go "experience Oktoberfest" downtown. So, since I had driven, I stayed downtown with them.
Now, everyone knows that I don't like people in general, so why I decided to stay downtown and not just let them catach a ride home is a mystery. The best part is that during this time, we got to talk about my all-time favorite subjects: (1) Car Maintenance, (2) College Football and why John Parker Wilson is such a pansy, (3) Stories about drinking and how much everyone can drink before they spew, (4) War Stories. I was really able to contribute much to the evening.
As I sat there outside the bar, the area was notably filled with college age kids, since Yale is just up the street. I wondered what it would have been like to go to Yale. When I got back to the room tonight, the first thing I did was go to yale.edu and navigate my way to their engineering department. Man, their staff looks like some freaks from the ones I looked at. Scary. I guess I'm glad I went to UAH instead. Shane posted tons of pix on facebook today, many of which were from our UAH days and wow, we had some absolutely fun times in college. I would not trade my college experience for anything!
Two of my best times revolved around my involvement with the concrete canoe program and then later, when I got involved with Dr. Li and her research on anti-gravity using super conducting magnets. That was pretty interesting work right there. I rememeber we had to do the whole clean room thing with scrubs and masks and gloves, go into this controlled environment and make by hand the magnets and bake them in the oven and then do all this other stuff to them. Some weekends I would actually spend locked up in the Optics building and have to spend the night there to monitor the magnets. It was shortly after that I realized that lab work and experimental research was not my cup of tea.
