Grandma would unfold a tri level cardboard wall. She would sit on one side and I the other. I would then take a dowel rod with a piece of string stapled to it, to the end of which was a plastic sandwich bag, and lift it up over the wall.
It would hang there for a few seconds. I would feel a tug on the line and I knew I had a bite. It was always fun too lift it up and see what kind of fish I had caught.
Sometimes it would be a snickers bar, or a pack of M&Ms, or a pack of gum.
I use to love going fishing at Grandma Root's house.

Grandpa Mikami had an old green military jeep from the early 1900's. Once a week we would load it up with trash and we would take it to the city dump on the outskirts of Hilo.
I always looked forward to helping Grandpa. We had a lot of fun.
Isn't it amazing how when you are a kid, the things you consider fun?

Its always comforting when I look back and see all the valuable lessons I actually learned from both sets of grandparents. How to work hard, be an encouragement, be positive, always do your best. You know, life's basic lessons.
While it's not necessarily tied to fishing, grandpa and grandma always were so much fun. I loved sharing with them what I was doing in school and my hobbies and my big dreams.
I wish Brayden could meet both sets of his great grandparents. There is no doubt they would have had a great time.
Fortunately he has grandpa and grandma close by to help reinforce the things I believe are important to help swing the odds in our favor he will be successful at whatever he wants to do!
